Will Europe go back to buying Russian gas? | The Bottom Line
After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Europe made a pledge to wean itself off Russian gas by 2027. Three years into the war, it looks like this commitment hasn’t been as ironclad as it seemed in 2022. The CEO of Totalenergies said recently in an interview with Reuters that Europe could go back to buying Russian gas, possibly at levels half as high as before the war. Szymon Kardaś, Senior Policy Fellow at European Council on Foreign Relations, tells us it’s an unsound strategy, as it was Moscow who turned off the gas supply taps after the war started.
