Bechtel and Westinghouse sign a nuclear contract with Poland | The Bottom Line

After months of negotiations, the consortium of two American giants – the construction company Bechtel and nuclear tech provider Westinghouse – signed a new contract with the Polish government for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the country. This may not sound revolutionary, but with a project of this scale (ca. €50B) sorting out legal issues is paramount. For now, there are only two legal hurdles left: the European Commission’s green light for state aid the plant will receive and construction permits for the plant itself (work on the adjacent infrastructure has already begun). We talk with Adam Kisiel, professor of nuclear physics at the Warsaw University of Technology and director of the University’s Center for Nuclear and Quantum Physics, to navigate the complexities of a nuclear project of this scale.
